Southwest Railways SWR Zone based in Hubli,Karnataka has introduced biodiesel for trains, running under your area. In this sense, the first train of SWR Hubballi-Bangalore Express Janshatabdi I fed five percent biodiesel mixed with high-speed diesel was marked out of Hubli. The main objective of the initiative is to reduce greenhouse gas GHG emissions and carbon footprint and also to fuel more efficiently.
To meet the demand for biodiesel, SWR zone established biodiesel filling centers in Hubli, Hospet and Bangalore. In next year all 13 train stations in the area have their own filling units and biodiesel blend is gradually increased to ten percent.
Biodiesel is a green fuel which provides quasi renewable energy cleaner and sustainable alternative fuel for diesel locomotives and reduces dependence on fossil fuels, especially diesel. It is commonly derived from crops such as sugar cane, cassava, corn, potato, beetroot and recently from grapes, bananas and dates etc.
Union government is promoting the use of biodiesel in India Railways for the purpose of energy security, cleaner air and savings in foreign exchange, together with employment opportunities in rural areas
